I see this in one of those stealerships that only sell used cars.

Its a Porsche 924. I don't know how many miles, and it's sort of just been parked on some gravel under a tree. I don't know what shape the frame is in, but from a quick glance on my morning commute (I'm on a train, so I can't just stop), it seems in relatively good shape.

How much do you think it's worth?

It looks nice. Dunno how much it's worth but be careful. I almost bought an old 968 but got scared off after doing some research. Maintenance costs on the early water cooled Porsches are supposed to be worse than the old air cooled ones.

Local CL has a roller 94 for $800 and a 924S with 944 motor for $1800.

With these puppies, I'd rather have one that is operated more often. If that one isn't running, then $800. They will laugh you off the lot, of course. Profit-minded.

The one in the pic you posted is a 924 GTA, and worth a bit even in poor shape. Cooking 924s in poor shape are worth next to nothing. In good shape they're worth quite a bit, but the cost of getting them there can be astronomical. I haven't done it, but I did have a look recently just to make sure I wasn't unfairly ruling them out of my search, given the prices they go for. Some of the parts seem fairly reasonable, but then you'll run across stuff that costs a hundred quid for a single relay, or a rubber hose, or some such.

I would need more pictures but if its what I think it is it could be worth a decent amount. Or a horrible soul crushing fake.

For what it's worth, they are reliable motors when maintained. But as stated, the cost of maintenance is higher than many of the alternatives.

I read that they were reliable as well. The issue I read about was that not all Porsche mechanics are trained on the older water cooled engines. So shops and dealerships charge more for the big jobs because the resources are harder to schedule.

If you can find a reputable independent Porsche mechanic, you should be fine. There's nothing radically different about the 924/944/928 motors versus any other motor. That said, it is not only a water cooled, belt driven interference engine, but Porsche's first water cooled, belt driven interference engine. So, don't expect the maintenance free longevity of Porsche's chain driven motors. And add to that the additional maintenance of flushing coolant, replacing water pumps, etc. Given the (I'm blanking on the right word. It's more fragile than contemporary engines, but it's also higher performing...) nature of the engine, it's reliable. But like most German cars, they're a pain in the ass to work on, labor intensive if you cannot work on them, and parts are expensive. And even if you can do the work yourself, the 944 engine requires an expensive, special tool to replace the timing belt...

Honestly, the budget play with 924/944 models is to find one in decent but not great shape for a decent to good price, and then, depending on the shape and expected time of ownership, maybe pay to replace the timing belt and water pump. Once that's done, drive the hell out of it, doing only normal car maintenance (oil, filters, lubrication) and see how long you can go before it the repairs become cost preventative, then dump the car. The previous owners already paid for a majority of the deprecation in value, so at this point, you are morally obligated to hoon the s*** out of one...

You mean GTS? There was a 924 Carrera GT in 1980 (they made about 400 of them total, and Germany got about half) then a 924 Carrera GTS in '81 that's even more rare (less than 60 made, about 1/4 of them were the Clubsport package with a cage). So more than likely, this is a GT, but could even be a standard 924 made to look like a GT.

Now I'm depressed. I should have bought the 968 I ran across earlier this year. It was in good running order, didn't have a crazy high number of miles on it, and was selling for $8500. It was red on beige and of course MT. It was a fun little car to drive and I really dig the looks of the 968.

Yeah, typo. I'm pretty sure the car in the picture is a GTS. The OP took it from GIS, I assume, rather than being a picture of the actual example for sale.

You're probably right, unless he counts the aggregate in the concrete as gravel, and that stick behind it as the tree it's under.

Hey Turbosloth - is the above photo exactly like the one you saw? Non-popup lights, hood scoop, fender flares in the back add-ons (and not one-piece metal)? You sure it's a 924 and not a 944?

I want to love the 968 - I really do, but those headlights!

Kinja'd!!!

Just so... 70s 928 on a 90s looking car. :(

In the span of 24 hours you've made me feel bad for not buying the car, then made me feel better again for showing me what the headlights look like when popped up.

I've never seen a 968 at night, and I never popped them up when I went for a test drive or looked for a picture of one with the lights up. I don't mind them when they're flush with the car. But man are they hideous when up!! They somehow look even worse than the 928's lights do when popped up.

A 944 Turbo would be the way to go for sure.
